Rail Privé

Africa’s Private Rail Journeys

Private carriage, private compartment, private dining, private excursions — the luxury of time, crossing Africa by rail rather than racing over it.

The key word is private: private carriage, private compartment, private dining, private excursions, and — for a full charter — an entire train that belongs to your party alone.

Four Levels

Rail Privé Journeys
the entry point, booked cabin by cabin aboard a scheduled departure
Private Carriage
a carriage reserved for a family or small group within a scheduled journey
Full Train
a complete charter, in which every passenger aboard belongs to the same party
Grand Expeditions
train, private aviation, safari, marine and island, sold together as one continuous journey

The Pride of Africa

Our core rail benchmark is Rovos Rail — “The Pride of Africa”, founded in 1989. Its wood-panelled trains carry no television or radio in the suites; guests are meant to watch Africa go by. It sells the luxury of time rather than the luxury of speed.

Suites run in three tiers: Pullman, a compact en-suite cabin of around seven square metres; Deluxe, at around ten square metres, adding a small private lounge; and Royal, the flagship, at around sixteen square metres — roughly half a carriage, with its own private lounge and a Victorian-style bath.

Headline journeys include the Cape Town Journey, from Pretoria to Cape Town through the Karoo; the Victoria Falls Journey, via Limpopo and Matobo National Park with a Hwange game drive; the Namibia Safari; and the Dar es Salaam crossing, from South Africa through Zimbabwe and Zambia to Tanzania.

The Africa Privé Grand Journey

A route for a full charter: Cape Town, the Winelands, the Great Karoo, Kimberley and Pretoria, then Kruger, Victoria Falls, Hwange, the Zambezi and the Okavango — one continuous private journey by rail, air, road and water.

The Privé Train — a complete charter for thirty to forty guests, with private suites, dining, bar and observation carriage, its own chef and sommelier, and safari excursions and aviation connections built in, chartered for seven, ten, fourteen or twenty-one nights.

Rovos Rail

Old-World Luxury, Rolling Across the Continent

A privately owned luxury train, running since 1989, carrying a maximum of 72 guests in 36 wood-panelled suites, with journeys from 48 hours to 15 nights linking Pretoria, Cape Town, Victoria Falls, Durban, Namibia and Dar es Salaam, and meals, drinks and excursions all included.

Rovos Rail is a travel product in its own right, and the train is the destination. Each train is a rebuilt, wood-panelled set carrying no more than 72 guests, with 36 suites, dining cars, a lounge car and an open-air observation car. Journeys run from 48 hours to 15 nights, and they can be combined for discounts or linked into wider Southern Africa itineraries through Rovos Rail’s collections.

The trains may be pulled by diesel or electric locomotives, and there are no radios or televisions on board. Days are smart casual and evenings are formal. Whole trains are also available for charter, and a separate Events Train takes up to 250 guests on daytime journeys.

Ideal For

  • Couples and honeymooners, including through Rovos Rail’s Honeymoon Collection
  • Travellers who value the journey itself and enjoy slow, scenic travel
  • Guests adding a rail leg before or after a safari in Botswana, Zimbabwe or Zambia
  • Golfers, through the nine-night Golf Safari
  • Groups and organisations wanting a private charter or the Events Train

Rovos Rail – The Glamour of the Golden Age, Across Africa

Since 1989, Rovos Rail has carried guests through the heart of the continent in restored, wood-panelled carriages, bringing the glamour of the golden age of leisure travel to some of Africa’s greatest destinations. Journeys last from a weekend of 48 hours to 15 nights, and each is paired with off-train excursions such as game drives, mine and museum tours and a night at the Victoria Falls Hotel.

Life on board is unhurried. Each of the 36 suites has its own en-suite bathroom, and the Royal Suites take up half a carriage with a private lounge and a Victorian bath. Meals are served in the dining cars, tea in the lounge and observation cars, and the observation car at the rear has an open-air balcony and large picture windows onto the passing landscape.

Most journeys can be run in either direction and combined into longer itineraries, from a short run between Pretoria and Cape Town or Victoria Falls to the long crossings to

Namibia and Dar es Salaam.
